Los Angeles Chargers Preseason Details

The Chargers entered professional football as the San Diego Chargers in 1960 and remained in that city until their move to Los Angeles in 2017. The team spent much of their early San Diego years training at the University of San Diego and the University of California, San Diego. In 2005, the Chargers moved their training camp and preseason practices to facilities near their home stadium. With a move to Los Angeles, the team’s training camp home shifted to nearby Costa Mesa.

The Chargers franchise has also moved its home stadiums several times over the course of its history. In 1960, the team hosted home games at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. After the first season, the Chargers played six seasons at Balboa Stadium. Qualcomm Stadium, previously known as Jack Murphy Stadium, hosted the Chargers from 1967 to 2016. The Chargers then moved to Dignity Health Sports Park in 2017 after the move to Los Angeles.

The team’s preseason practices at Jack Hammett Sports Complex are free for the public. Fans are allowed to reserve bleacher seats by requesting seat passes for each practice. The team breaks up the usual schedule of position drills with an intrasquad scrimmage that simulates a regular season game. Chargers players past and present are often available for autographs following each practice. Fans of the team may also see players from other teams at practice due to a history of joint practices with teams like the New Orleans Saints.

The Los Angeles Chargers may play in the AFC West but their preseason rivalries focus on NFC divisions. The San Francisco 49ers are the team’s biggest exhibition rival due in part to the proximity of Los Angeles to San Francisco. The Seattle Seahawks join the 49ers as NFC West teams that often play the Chargers in the run-up to the regular season. Chargers fans also enjoy preseason contests with NFC South teams like the Atlanta Falcons and the Saints.

Chargers preseason history is filled with interesting moments. The San Diego Chargers faced the St. Louis Cardinals in a 1976 preseason clash in Japan, the first NFL game outside of the United States. In 1998, the Chargers defeated the Indianapolis Colts 33-3 in a rare matchup between the top two picks in the NFL Draft, Chargers quarterback Ryan Leaf and Colts quarterback Peyton Manning.
