Living on campus is ideal for students to immerse themselves in college culture. For some, this means joining a sports team, but for others, it’s jamming out in the dorm rooms with new friends. In 1983, the dorm rooms at the University of Vermont gave rise to the American rock band, Phish. The group began playing shows around the university and collaborated with other artists, releasing a string of experimental self-titled cassettes over the next few years. In 1989 the rock band got their big break after playing a sold-out show at the Paradise Rock Club in Boston. Later that year, they released their debut album Junta, which included their signature song ‘You Enjoy Myself. ’  Although the group went on to release many studio albums, they are best known for their Grateful Dead-inspired live performances. Phish began putting together their own music festivals, eventually developing a cult-like following of “Phish Heads. ” The improvisational band produces genre-bending sounds by blending elements of funk, reggae, bluegrass, progressive rock and electronic music during their shows. With an emphasis on live performance over studio work, it’s no wonder that fans are known to travel the world to see this iconic jam-band play.
