2022 BNP Paribas Open: Everything You Need to Know

The BNP Paribas Open returns today, March 9! It’s been three years since the event took place during its normally scheduled slot on the tennis calendar, but it returns today at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Novak Djokovic’s appearance is uncertain, Naomi Osaka will play, and defending champion, Paula Badosa, will look to keep her title.

Ukrainian, Russian and Belarussian players have a different focus with recent events unfolding. Elina Svitolina asked for players from Russia and Belarus to be recognized as “neutral athletes,” and claimed she wouldn’t play any player from either country until then. She initially withdrew from her first match at the Monterrey Open last week because she was playing Russian player Anastasia Potapova. Regarding the incident, Svitolina stated, “I was on a mission for my country,” and planned to donate all of her earnings to the Ukrainian army. The WTA and ATP then announced they would allow players from Russia and Belarus to participate but would not be playing under their country’s names or flags.

Following suit, Andy Murray announced he would donate all of his prize money this season to UNICEF’s efforts to help children in Ukraine. Daria Saville urged her fellow players to wear blue and yellow during the event to show their support. The return of BNP Paribas Open, while long-awaited, will be an exciting event all-around.
