The World Baseball Classic is an international baseball tournament that takes place every four years. The tournament is the first of its kind to have national baseball teams feature professional players from the major leagues around the world. Sanctioned by Major League Baseball, the Major League Baseball Players Association, the International Baseball Federation and other professional baseball leagues around the world, the WBC takes the place of the Olympics for baseball, which were discontinued back in 2005. The first two editions of the tournament, held in 2006 and 2009, were both won by the Japanese national team.
This year the tournament takes place from March 2 through March 19 at various venues throughout the world, from here in the United States at Chase Field in Phoenix to Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium in Taichung, Taiwan. The Championship Round will take place at AT&T Park, home to World Series Champions, the San Francisco Giants.
