In December 2016, he released his debut solo single, "Just Hold On," a collaboration with DJ Steve Aoki, which peaked at number two on the UK Singles Chart and was certified platinum. He continued to release solo music, including "Back to You" featuring Bebe Rexha in 2017. In January 2020, Tomlinson released his debut solo studio album, Walls, which debuted at number four in the UK and number nine on the US Billboard 200. The album's themes ranged from relationships and family to personal growth and self-reflection, drawing inspiration from indie rock and Britpop influences.
In November 2022, Tomlinson released his second studio album, Faith in the Future, which debuted at number one in the UK and number five on the US Billboard 200. The album was met with critical acclaim and led to a successful world tour in 2023, earning him a nomination for Best Live Act at the inaugural Rolling Stone UK Awards. In addition to his music career, Tomlinson has been involved in philanthropy, donating millions to various charities and participating in causes such as Soccer Aid. He also launched a streetwear brand, "28," in August 2023, incorporating his native White Rose of York into the branding.
