Milwaukee Brewers Details

Milwaukee Brewers

The Milwaukee Brewers’ name has been around Major League Baseball since 1894. The original Brewers spent just one year in Milwaukee before relocating to St. Louis and eventually Baltimore to become the Baltimore Orioles. The current franchise joined the American League in 1969. They spent a season as the Seattle Pilots before they relocated to Milwaukee and resurrected the Brewers’ name.

Long-time MLB home run king Hank Aaron played much of his career in Milwaukee. He was first a member of the Milwaukee Braves but left with the Braves franchise when they moved to Atlanta in 1966. Aaron went back to Milwaukee at the end of his career, joining the Brewers in 1975. Aaron hit his final home run — his 755th — in Milwaukee in 1976.

In 1998, the Brewers moved from the American League to the National League. The team currently plays in the NL Central Division.

The Brewers have made five playoff appearances but have not won a World Series title. The club’s best season came in 1982, when they won the American League pennant. They moved on to their only World Series to date and faced the St. Louis Cardinals. The Brewers had a deep team that included future hall of famers like relief pitcher Rollie Fingers and second baseman Paul Molitor, but the Cardinals ultimately prevailed in a series-deciding Game 7.

The last Brewers’ playoff appearance came in 2011, after the team won its first NL Central title. The Brewers reached the NLCS and faced their old nemesis: the Cardinals. The Cardinals won the series on their way to a World Series title.

Although they did not reach the playoffs, the Brewers had a strong season in 2017. They finished with an 86-76 record, just six games behind the Cubs for first in the NL Central and one game behind the Rockies for a Wild Card spot. Third baseman Travis Shaw led the team with 31 home runs. In the offseason leading up to 2018, the Brewers signed free agent center fielder Lorenzo Cain and traded to acquire Christian Yelich from the Miami Marlins. The Brewers hope their new-look outfield will make them a contender in the 2018 season.

The Brewers play at Miller Park, which opened in 2001. The park is known for its fan-shaped roof that can open and close in just ten minutes.
