Coors Field Details
Coors Field is the home to Major League Baseball’s Colorado Rockies. The Rockies formed as an expansion team in 1993 but had to play their first two seasons at Mile High Stadium, which they shared with the Broncos. Coors Field was completed for the 1995 season.
The naming rights to the field belong to Coors Brewing Company, which operates a brewery in Colorado that is the largest brewing facility in the world. The field is located in Denver, Colorado in lower downtown. It holds 50,398 fans.
Because of Denver’s high altitude, Coors Field developed a reputation as the most homerun-friendly park in baseball. The ball travels further when hit through the thinner air, and curveballs do not curve as much as they do in lower altitudes. The park holds the Major League record for homeruns in a season: 303 homeruns were hit at Coors Field in 1999. The Rockies have cut down on the number of homeruns by storing their baseballs in a large humidor, but Coors Field is still the most hitter-friendly park in Major League Baseball.
The 1998 MLB All-Star game was played at Coors Field (before the humidor) and is the highest scoring all-star game to date. The American League scored 13 runs and had 19 hits, defeating the National League, which scored 8 runs and 12 hits.
The Rockies represented the National League in the 2007 World Series. Coors Field hosted games three and four of the Series. The Boston Red Sox won all four games.
In recent years, a number of non-baseball events have been held at Coors Field. In 2015, the field hosted its first major concert, when the Zac Brown Band played in front of 42,000 spectators. The National Hockey League’s Colorado Avalanche played a home game at Coors Field in February 2016 as part of the NHL’s Stadium Series. They lost to the Detroit Red Wings by a score of 5-3.
What’s the best place to sit at Coors Field?
The Rockpile is Coors Fields’ center field bleacher section. The section was originally made famous at the Rockies’ original home: Rockpile seats at Mile High Stadium sold for just a dollar. At Coors Field, they’re still among the best values at the park. If you’re lucky enough to get tickets to a fireworks night, fans who sit in the Rockpile are able to move onto the field after the game for the fireworks.
For a good view of the Rocky Mountains, try to sit in the upper decks (especially sections 305-319). If you’re going to a day game, you’ll want to sit on the third base side to stay out of the sun.
Tips and Tricks
If you’re driving to the game, parking in the lot off Park Avenue and Wazee Street is a good option. But if you want to avoid driving in downtown Denver on a busy night (and who could blame you?), you can take public transportation (the A, B, C, E, and W rail lines) to Union Station and walk from there to the park. The Rockies also offer a shuttle service called RockiesRide, but the service only operates on weekend and fireworks games.
Batting practice starts two hours before the game, and the Rockies will bat first. The Rockies dugout is in front of sections 122-125, and the visiting team sits in front of sections 136-139. You can watch batting practice from these sections and even try to snag an autograph.
- Coors Clubhouse: Premium seats located behind home plate. Includes access to a private restaurant and lounge and in-seat service.
- Warning Track Party Room: Great for large groups. Located on the field level under the out-of-town scoreboard. View of the game from the outfield, down low. Includes food and non-alcoholic drinks.
- Super Suites: Good for small and large groups. Includes free parking, food, and non-alcoholic drinks. Seats are along the first base line.
If you came to Coors Field looking for beer, you have to go to The Blue Moon Brewery at the Sandlot. You can enter the restaurant both from the field and from the street. Coors uses the brewery to experiment with craft recipes. Blue Moon, which is sold just about everywhere these days, was invented at the Sandlot.
You can bring outside food and drink to the park in a small soft-sided cooler, so plan ahead to save on concessions.
CHUBurger on the upper deck has some of the best burgers and fries in the park. If you’re in the mood for something sweeter, locations throughout the park offer unique Apple Pie Nachos.
