What to expect at Weezer’s The Gathering Tour: Setlist, start time, merch and more

If there is one thing to know about a Weezer concert, it’s that the band knows exactly who is in the room.

At their Sept. 9 show at Chase Center in San Francisco, Weezer fans showed their true loyalty. Fans were repping Weezer shirts from every past tour, throwing up the signature Weezer “W” and the audience was ready to belt out every word to the songs as soon as the band hit the stage.

But The Gathering Tour is also much more than Weezer running through the hits. The entire show is built around a uniquely on-brand Weezer backyard-party storyline, complete with mind control, a suburban house, a swimming pool, and a setlist that draws from across the band's catalog.

With Silversun Pickups and The Shins opening the night, there was also a lot of music packed into one ticket.

So, if you have Weezer tickets for an upcoming Gathering Tour show, here is what to expect before you go.

What a Weezer “The Gathering Tour” concert is actually like

The easiest way to describe The Gathering is part rock concert, part backyard party, and part wonderfully weird Weezer movie.

The band's stage is designed to look like the backyard of a suburban residence, with a house, fence, and power lines stretching across the setup. A huge screen behind it brings the rest of the show's story and special effects to life.

And there is an actual storyline behind all of it.

Before Weezer takes the stage, a video introduces a kid who tells his bullies that Weezer is playing at a party at his house. There's just one problem: he can’t actually afford to book Weezer.

His solution is to create flyers advertising “a gathering” and cover them with mysterious symbols that seem to mind-control everyone who sees them. Eventually, Rivers Cuomo gets his hands on one, his eyes turn orange, and suddenly, Weezer is on its way to play at the backyard party.

The bit keeps going throughout the night. When cameras turn toward fans in the crowd, the screens occasionally give them glowing orange eyes too, pulling the audience into the story.

It is strange, funny, and extremely on-brand.

Who is opening for Weezer on The Gathering Tour?

At the San Francisco show, Silversun Pickups opened the night, followed by The Shins.

Silversun Pickups came on at 7 p.m. and played for about 30 minutes, packing five songs into a short opening set.

The Shins followed at 7:50 p.m. with a longer set that lasted until around 8:40. Their set included songs like “Simple Song,” “New Slang” and “Caring Is Creepy,” before closing with “Sleeping Lessons” mixed with R.E.M.'s “It's the End of the World as We Know It.”

The crowd was still filling in during Silversun Pickups, while The Shins had a noticeably fuller room. They even mentioned that it was their first time playing a venue that large. It took a couple of songs for the set to really hit its stride, but by the end, plenty of people were on their feet and dancing.

What time does Weezer go on stage?

That gave fans about 35 minutes between The Shins and Weezer.

Which sounded like plenty of time until everyone else decided that it was the perfect moment to grab a drink, use the bathroom, or get merch.

If you want to be confident that you won’t miss any of Weezer’s set, I would plan to be back at your seat well before 9:15.

How long is a Weezer show?

Weezer played for approximately one hour and 30 minutes, taking the stage around 9:15 p.m. and finishing at approximately 10:45.

If you are counting both opening acts, the full concert ran for about three hours and 45 minutes, beginning with Silversun Pickups at 7 p.m.

That makes this a pretty substantial night of live music, especially if you arrive right when the doors open.

Weezer's The Gathering Tour setlist

Weezer's Gathering Tour setlist pulls from across the band's catalog instead of saving every recognizable song for the very end.

At Chase Center, the band opened with “Shine Again” before moving quickly into “Surf Wax America,” “Keep Fishin'” and “Hash Pipe.”

There were also some fun departures from the normal setup. During “Long Time Sunshine,” the band members switched instruments for an acoustic performance. And Silversun Pickups bassist Nikki Monninger joined Weezer for several songs later in the show.

Setlists can always change from show to show, but this gives a good idea of the mix of Weezer classics, deeper cuts, and newer material showing up on The Gathering Tour.

Is there an encore?

No, at least there wasn't in San Francisco.

After “Island in the Sun,” the show was over. There was no walk-off-and-wait-for-the-crowd-to-scream encore break, so don’t assume there will be another two or three songs coming once Weezer reaches the end of the set.

What is The Gathering Tour stage setup like?

This might be one of the most memorable parts of the tour.

Rather than a traditional arena stage, Weezer has built a suburban backyard inside the venue, complete with a house, fencing, power lines, and a huge video screen behind it all, which expands the world of “The Gathering.”

The production also keeps returning to the mind-control storyline introduced at the very beginning of Weezer’s set.

When the camera lands on fans in the audience, their eyes can suddenly glow orange on the screen, making it look like the crowd has fallen under the same spell that got Weezer to the party in the first place.

The whole experience feels less like random concert visuals and more like one continuous inside joke between the band and the audience.

And the backyard-party commitment goes all the way through the finale: at the end of the show, Rivers “jumps” into the backyard “pool.”

What to know before going to Weezer’s The Gathering Tour

Once you have your ticket, a little planning can make the rest of the night much easier, especially when you are looking at nearly four hours of music.

How early should you arrive for Weezer?

Doors opened at 6 p.m. for the Chase Center show, with Silversun Pickups beginning at 7.

Security moved relatively quickly because multiple lines were available, but everyone still had to go through a metal detector.

If you want to catch both opening acts and still have time to look around the venue, grab food, and make a merch stop without rushing, getting there relatively close to when the doors open is a smart move.

If you mainly just want to see Weezer, remember that a 9:15 p.m. start does not mean arriving at 9:10 is a great idea. Going through security, walking to your section, and navigating crowds inside the venue can all add time.

What should you know about the bag policy?

Chase Center has a strict bag policy, so check the venue's current rules before heading to the show.

If your bag is too large, you may need to check it at the bag-check location outside the arena, which is another reason not to cut your arrival too close. Finding out your bag cannot come inside when Weezer is about to start is not the kind of pre-show surprise anyone needs.

What is the Weezer merch like?

There is plenty of merch available, and the timing of your purchase matters.

At Chase Center, fans could shop at a merch stand outside the arena without a ticket, and there were several additional stands once you got inside.

All three bands had merchandise available.

My biggest merch tip is to resist the urge to jump into the first long line you see.

The shortest lines of the night were during Silversun Pickups and in the break immediately after their set. At one point during that window, the wait was only around five minutes.

The lines got significantly longer between The Shins and Weezer.

And if you are at Chase Center specifically, I would avoid the main 100 Level concourse merch stand if other locations are open. It had the longest line I saw all night.

What were Weezer fans wearing?

This is a very easy concert to dress for.

The crowd in San Francisco was overwhelmingly casual, with plenty of jeans, t-shirts, and previous Weezer tour merch.

There is no need to plan an elaborate themed outfit unless you want to. A Weezer shirt, especially one from an older tour, fits right in.

Fans also have one very simple pose worth learning before you get there. You simply put your thumbs together with your pointer and middle fingers of each hand together to create a Weezer “W.” You will see plenty of them go up throughout the night.

What is the crowd like at a Weezer concert?

There is a good mix of nostalgic fans and people there to enjoy a good rock show.

Longtime fans clearly know the catalog, and there are plenty of moments built for singing along. But the production keeps the concert playful instead of making the entire night feel like just a greatest-hits run.

Weezer also knows how to work a big arena crowd.

The band is polished without making the show feel overly rehearsed, and the Gathering concept gives the night enough personality to make it feel different from simply seeing Weezer play another tour.
