As the first full week of the 2026 MLB season continues, some of the weekend’s top series are coming up. With SeatGeek serving as the Official Ticket Marketplace of MLB, fans have plenty of chances to catch one of those standout matchups live.

One of the biggest draws on the schedule is the Miami Marlins squaring off against the New York Yankees, with New York set to host its home opener on Friday, April 3 at 1:35 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium. So let’s check out the major storylines for this upcoming series.

Miami Marlins at New York Yankees series preview

This series was circled as a key standout this weekend largely due to the fact that it’s the Yankees’ home opener after starting the year in San Francisco and Seattle, but the Marlins have been quite formidable to start the year, entering Friday with a 5-1 record just like New York.

Yes, Miami took advantage of a softer start to the year with a sweep of the Rockies and a series win over the White Sox – two teams that combined for 221 losses in 2025 – but all you can do is play the team in front of you, and the Marlins took care of business.

The Yankees played very well to open the year as well, with a dominant sweep of the Giants and taking two of three over a very good Mariners team.

Here are the local game times for the series, along with a promotion available for this weekend.

Friday, April 3: 1:35 p.m. ET Saturday, April 4: 7:05 p.m. ET (Calendar night for the first 40,000 fans) Sunday, April 5: 1:35 p.m. ET

Marlins: What got into Miami’s bats?

As we discussed, the Marlins had a soft landing spot to begin 2026, but boy have their bats been stellar. Xavier Edwards is hitting .409, Owen Cassie has an OPS of nearly 1.000 and Liam Hicks of all people leads MLB with 12 RBIs entering Thursday.

Now, will all that last? Probably not, especially given what New York’s pitchers have done to begin the 2026 season, but if Miami is able to string hits and runs together at a rate even close to what the team has done thus far, then perhaps the Marlins will be a team worth keeping a closer eye on as the season progresses.

And while we won’t see him this series, we’d be remiss not to mention Sandy Alcantara, who has pitched 16 scoreless innings in his first two starts of the year. Is he back?

Yankees: Can Aaron Judge get hot like Yanks’ arms?

This is a bit of a two-parter. First, Judge – like many Team USA WBC members – is off to a slower start to the year. Yes, he swatted two home runs in a series sweep of the Giants, but he’s done little else and his strikeout and whiff rates are quite high. The reigning MVP has struck out 11 times through six games and has just three total hits.

Thankfully for Judge and the Yankees, their pitching staff has been absolutely outstanding. No Gerrit Cole or Carlos Rodon? No problem for the Yanks. New York allowed only one run in three games in San Francisco before giving up just five in Seattle. The Yankees have played six games and have three shutouts already. That’s pretty wild stuff. And if Judge does Judge things while the staff puts up zeroes, we could be looking at a 2024 World Series rematch with the Dodgers come October.

Top pitching matchup: Max Meyer vs. Ryan Weathers (Saturday)

Meyer is an extremely talented young arm that has struggled with injury and inconsistency. His progress in 2026 will be a storyline worth keeping a close eye on in Miami as the 2020 No. 3 overall pick aims to cement himself as an MLB starter. Meyer allowed three runs and struck out five in five innings against Colorado in his season debut.

But this pitching matchup centers around Weathers, who the Yankees acquired from the Marlins this offseason. The hard-throwing southpaw put up good numbers in Miami, but he made just 27 appearances in three years with the Marlins. So far, so good as a Yankee, however, as he struck out seven in just 4 1/3 innings of work against the Mariners this week, allowing one run in the process. It’ll be fun to see how he does against his former squad.
