Atlanta Falcons Preseason Details
The Atlanta Falcons have built a following in the Southeast since entering the NFL in 1966. The team played its first preseason game on August 1, 1966, a 9-7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Falcons fans are able to get close to the team in the preseason with a training camp in Flowery Branch, Georgia. This city is located just over an hour by car northeast of the Atlanta metro area, offering a quiet place to practice for the Falcons. Fans can attend practice at the team’s training complex with free preseason rosters available at the main entrance. The team also offers food and drink stands just inside of the facility for fans to enjoy.
In 2017, the Falcons and Major League Soccer counterparts Atlanta United FC opened Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The state-of-the-art facility quickly became a fixture for Falcons preseason events with the annual Falcons Fan Day in August. The Falcons Fan Day schedule includes a scrimmage by the team and entertainment for fans throughout the stadium. The Mercedes-Benz retractable roof is also opened to show the stadium’s architectural majesty. Fans pay a small fee to attend the event and enjoy an opportunity to see the stadium before the pressure-packed regular season begins.
The Falcons maintain preseason rivalries extending beyond their NFC South confines. Atlanta often plays regional foe Jacksonville Jaguars in exhibition games. The Miami Dolphins also feature prominently in the team’s preseason plans. Fans of the Atlanta Falcons are treated to matchups against AFC teams like the Cleveland Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers that they rarely see in the regular season. Home preseason games at Mercedes-Benz Stadium allow fans to enjoy concessions from chicken sandwiches at Chick-fil-A to barbecue from Fox Bros. Bar and Jim ‘N Nicks.
Falcons preseason games have historically offered chances for future legends to ready for challenges down the road. Linebacker Jessie Tuggle, who played all 13 years of his career with the Falcons, made his debut during a 19-14 preseason win over the Buffalo Bills. Future Hall of Famer Deion Sanders began his illustrious career during a 23-17 preseason loss to the Eagles. Quarterback Matt Ryan’s first NFL game was a 20-17 loss to the Jaguars in August 2008. Ryan threw for 113 yards and a touchdown pass in his first professional game.
