The White Sox’s pope hat may be the MLB promotion of the season and the data backs it up

The best MLB promotions don’t just get fans talking, they get fans moving. The White Sox’s pope hat has done exactly that, turning an ordinary Tuesday night in August against the Reds into a game fans suddenly want to be at.

This promotion was always built to get attention. What nobody knew at first was just how much of a crowd it would draw. Once the White Sox expanded the giveaway to all fans in attendance, that question got answered pretty quickly.

After looking at SeatGeek’s ticket data, there’s a strong case that this may be the giveaway of the 2026 MLB season.

What is the White Sox’s pope hat promotion?

The promo is built around Pope Leo XIV, a Chicago native and longtime White Sox fan. That gave the White Sox something most clubs can’t pull off: a giveaway tied to a figure people everywhere recognize who also has a real connection to the franchise.

The rollout started April 8, when the White Sox announced the pope-themed hat as part of a specialty-ticket package for their Aug. 11 game against Cincinnati. The team dubbed it “Pews at the Ballpark,” and at first the hat was reserved for fans who bought the designated package in certain sections. It was a limited-edition play, not a full-ballpark giveaway.

The real turning point came two days later. On April 10, the White Sox widened the promotion to a ballpark-wide giveaway for all fans in attendance, saying the move came because of “overwhelming fan demand.”

The first announcement got people’s attention. The second one made Aug. 11 feel like a game fans needed to have on their calendar.

How the pope hat promo has impacted sales for the White Sox’s Aug. 11 game

Once the White Sox made the giveaway available to everyone in the ballpark, the market moved fast.

More tickets have been sold on SeatGeek for Reds at White Sox on Aug. 11 than for any other remaining White Sox home game this season outside of the Cubs-White Sox series from May 15-17, the only time those two teams meet at Rate Field this year.

Since the April 10 announcement, 32.2% of all White Sox home-game tickets purchased on SeatGeek for games in May or later have been for Aug. 11. For one game to account for nearly a third of purchases across 65 remaining home dates outside of March and April is a massive outlier.

When zeroing in on Aug. 11 specifically, the timing tells the story. A whopping 94.9% of all tickets purchased for the game have come since the White Sox opened the giveaway to all fans on April 10, with another 4.0% bought the day before.

Prices have followed the same demand pattern. The get-in price for the game was $15 on April 8 and currently sits (as of April 15) at $47. The only remaining White Sox home games this season with a higher get-in price are for the same Cubs-White Sox series.

The buying behavior says a lot, too. Since the announcement, 50.7% of all tickets purchased for the game have been in the 500 level, with those upper-deck seats averaging $26 per ticket. That suggests fans are less focused on where they sit than on finding the cheapest way into the ballpark to get the unique giveaway.

How the White Sox pope hat stacks up against the biggest MLB ticket spikes of 2026

The most compelling case for the White Sox pope hat being MLB’s promotion of the season is how it compares to the rest of the league.

Among MLB games from May to September, Reds at White Sox on Aug. 11 ranks third on SeatGeek for tickets purchased on a single day, with that spike coming on April 10, the day the White Sox opened the giveaway to all fans.

The only games ahead of it are Phillies at Mets on Sept. 19, which jumped on April 6 after the Mets announced Carlos Beltrán’s jersey retirement and Mets Hall of Fame induction, and Blue Jays at Phillies on Aug. 7, which surged on March 12 after the Phillies announced Chase Utley’s Wall of Fame induction.

Considering those first two were events built around all-time names and franchise history, the fact that the White Sox landed in that same neighborhood with a giveaway puts this in rare company for a promo night.
