Detroit Lions Preseason Details
In operation since 1929, the Detroit Lions have developed a strong fan base in eastern Michigan by holding training camps throughout the region. Aside from the team’s early camps in Ohio, local fans have been able to enjoy Lions preseason practices since 1934. Practices were held at regional universities like Eastern Michigan University from 1949 to 1956 and Oakland University from 1975 to 1989. The Lions eventually moved their preseason preparations to their home practice field in 2002.
A recent tradition for the Detroit Lions is holding joint preseason practices with other NFL teams. These practices allow both teams to test their skills against outside competition. Lions fans enjoy seeing different teams and approaches to practice during their time at the team’s training complex. The team’s move toward practices against rival teams coincided with opening more preseason practices to the public. In the past, the Lions have allowed fans to view practice until the first preseason game. In recent years, fans have been able to witness joint practices and select practices through the early preseason.
Fans of all ages also gain preseason access to the Detroit Lions during the annual Family Day. This event typically takes place in early August and provides a free event for families throughout the Detroit metro area. The Lions Family Day includes a team scrimmage, appearances by past Lions players, and raffles for memorabilia.
Ford Field has hosted Lions preseason games since the stadium’s opening in 2002. The Lions played the Pittsburgh Steelers in Ford Field’s first football game on August 24, 2002. Detroit has hosted NCAA Basketball Final Fours, Super Bowls, and other events at this state-of-the-art stadium. Preseason is a good opportunity for football fans to try out the stadium’s concessions including buffalo chicken totchos, pigskin dogs, and discounted food and drink at select locations up to one hour after gates open. Ford Field’s downtown location also offers visitors the chance to combine Lions games with attractions like the MotorCity Casino and the GM Renaissance Center.
The Detroit Lions have built a preseason rivalry with their AFC foe the Buffalo Bills. Detroit and Buffalo are located within four hours of each other, allowing fans of both teams to attend exhibition games. The Lions also play the New York Jets, a regular season rival of the Bills, during most preseasons. The absence of other preseason rivalries means that Lions fans get to see teams like the New England Patriots and the Steelers who don’t regularly appear on the regular season schedule.
