St. Louis Cardinals Postseason History

One of the winningest franchises in the history of baseball, the St. Louis Cardinals have no shortage of postseason history. The team has had several periods of sustained success in the playoffs as they have had some of the strongest rosters in Major League Baseball to propel them to glory.

Among those periods of sustained success for the Cardinals was the 2000s, where the team made the playoffs seven out of ten years in the National League. There were plenty of reasons for that run of success, with manager Tony La Russa leading an elite group of talent to great heights. But with players like Albert Pujols, things for a manager get a little easier.

Pujols is one of the best postseason hitters of all-time, and put some of his best performances forward for that decade of Cardinals excellence. From 2004 to 2006, Pujols took part in eight playoff series for the Cardinals. He hit below .300 in just one of those series, and hit .500 or better in two of them. In 2005, he posted perhaps his signature moment when he hit a towering home run off of Brad Lidge in Game Five of the National League Championship Series, a home run that might still be rising if not for the wall all the way at the back of Minute Maid Park.

And speaking of clutch hitting, the 2011 Cardinals managed to win a title of their own thanks to the clutch hitting of David Freese. With the Cardinals an out away from dropping the series to the Texas Rangers, Freese hit a game-tying home run in the bottom of the ninth. He followed that up with a walk-off home run in the eleventh inning, setting the stage for a championship clinching win in Game Seven.

Given how often the Cardinals have been in the playoffs, the team has had no shortage of rivals during that time. Series with the Astros and Mets in the 2000s were memorable and stoked the flames of rivalries during that era. The same can be said about the Kansas City Royals, after the Cardinals took part in an epic seven game World Series against them in 1985.
