Brazilian Beauty Branches Out From Banda Eva (Updated November 28, 2012)
Ivete Sangalo first became known as the lead singer of the Bahian group Banda Eva in the late 1990's, but soon ventured out on her own to kick start a solo career. Recognized primarily as a Brazilian axe superstar, the singer/songwriter, actress and TV show host is one of the most popular Brazilian female singers of all time.
Sangalo, who performed at various events and festivals as a child, would record six albums with Banda Eva, which sold more than four million copies. But in 1997 she branched out from the group, and in 1999 would release her first self-titled album. It was the start of a successful solo effort for the Brazilian beauty, who would follow with the sophomore effort, "Beat Beleza," which earned her back-to-back platinum selling records.
The 2001 release of the album "Festa" furthered Sangalo's career. The title track was a major success and her biggest single to that point, becoming Brazil's most popular song of the year. It was, however, the start of a downward slope for Sangalo's career. It wasn't until the release of a live album in 2004 that her music became a big hit on radio again, thanks in large part to the single "Sorte Grande." Her 2005 album, "As Supernovas," also received triple platinum certification shortly after its release.
Sangalo has racked up sales of more than 7 million albums, more than 1.5 million DVDs and is one of the richest Brazilian entertainers of all time. She owns her own production company, holds several commercial deals, hosts the TV show "Estação Globo," and is heralded for her powerful voice and live performances. Her latest project is the album "Real Fantastia (Fantasy)," released October 9, 2012.
