About Jagwar Ma
They've been called a 'musical project,' and Jagwar Ma is just fine with that. The Australian psychedelic/dance band known for cuts like "Come Save Me" and "Let Her Go" are a standout name on a Mom + Pop label. Literally.
The trio – Gabriel Winterfield, Jona Ma and Jack Freeman – all grew up in Sydney and played in different outfits. It wasn't until the likes of The NME, London Times and Pitchfork began "Howlin" the band's praises (over their debut album of the same name) that Jagwar Ma really picked up steam. Suddenly everyone, from more iconic artists to peers like Foals, were high on the band.
In case you're wondering (and we're sure you are), the band's name comes from a satirical compound (today's version of the mashup) of the word 'jaguar' and Jono's surname. It's not the only part of their background that's interesting. Ma and Winterfield actually performed together in an experimental group, and would often use a living room as a makeshift recording studio.
These days, Jagwar Ma finds inspiration in even more unique recording spaces. They've played in an abandoned agricultural city in the French countryside, and also used the acoustics of a church for "Howlin." Following the release of the album the band played the Summer Festival circuit throughout the UK, EU and Australia. The trek included stops at Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury, Pukkelpop, Spendour in the Grass and more. The band has also been announced on the Coachella 2014 line-up, along with labelmates Flume and Sleigh Bells.
