Merry Evildoers becomes Guantanamo School of Medicine (Created May 9, 2013)
Meet the band with the longest, most memorable name in music. Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine was the result of Iggy Pop's 60th birthday gig at the Warfield in San Francisco. Inspired by the gathering, Biafra decided it was time to start a band. But their standing name may not even hold a candle to their original incarnation.
How does Jello Biafra and the Axis of Merry Evildoers sound? That's the moniker once held by the band, which included guitarist Ralph Spight, drummer Jon Weiss and bassist Billy Gould. The four-piece band rehearsed for just a month before a pair of sold-out shows at San Francisco's Great American Music Hall laid the groundwork for the group's first album. Once studio guitarist Kimo Ball was recruited, the quintet became Jello Biafra and the Guantanamo School of Medicine.
The band's sound has been described as 'spy-music-on-meth chaos' (ala The Dead Kennedys), mixed with Detroit-style prot-punk and layers of sonic guitar noise. They became known for songs like "The Terror of a Tiny Town," "Three Strikes" and "Electronic Plantation." Later there were singles such as "Clean as a Thistle," "Family Values" and "I Won't Give UP."
Jello Biafra and The Guantanamo School of Medicine has two albums and two EPs/singles to its name, including the latest – 2013's "White People and the Damage Done." It features the song "SHOCK-U-PY!", a tribute to the Occupy movement – an international protest movement against social and economic inequality that was sparked by wide press coverage on Wall Street in 2011.
