Come 'sea' what the fuss is all about with Jherek Bischoff (Created June 26, 2013)
Not many kids grew up like Jherek Bischoff, who has sailed through life (literally) since he was a young child.
Born in Sacramento, California, Bischoff lived with his parents aboard a sailboat they eventually took up the coast to the Pacific Northwest. By the time he was a teen, he'd taken part in a two-year sailing trip to Central America, through the Panama Canal and into the Caribbean. He learned to play bass at the age of 12, and by the time the family returned to their home on Bainbridge Island, he added what seemed to be an endless number of instruments to his repertoire.
Largely self-taught, Bischoff learned to play the saxophone, clarinet, trumpet, tuba, trombone, ukulele, banjo, stand-up bass, cello and violin. A virtual one-man band, he attended college part-time and gained experience writing arrangements and compositions for other artists. But it was 2012 when he gained a following as a solo performer with the release of "Composed" and the related instrumental album "Scores." It features nine orchestral pieces with a different vocalist on eight of the nine tracks.
In just a short time, the media has fallen hard for Bischoff. The New York Times called him a "pop polymath," The New Yorker called him the "Seattle phenom," and the New Musical Express named him the "missing link between the somber undertones of (Italian composer) Ennio Morricone and the unpredictability of (Welsh musician) John Cale." He's dedicated, working at least eight hours a day on music at home and an hour or more every night on the road.
Find Bischoff on tour through Europe through the fall, with dates booked into November.
