Kele Biography & News
His mash-up of genres, songwriting techniques and distinctive vocal delivery has allowed Kele Okereke's music to defy categorization since he was a young man. The English musician, best known as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the indie rock band Bloc Party, is one of Britain's most well-loved artists.
Though he officially started his career alongside Gordon Moakes and Matt Tong – permanent bass guitarist and drummer of Bloc Party, respectively – Kele would eventually take his career solo. Still, he rode the wave from the band's formation in 1999 to its eventual hiatus a decade later. The time frame included three studio albums, including the critically acclaimed debut "Silent Alarm." Next came "A Weekend in the City," which peaked at number two on the UK Albums Chart, and finally "Intimacy" in 2008.
It was late 2009 when Bloc Party went on hiatus and Kele decided to begin working on his own material. He packed up and moved to Berlin, and later began collaborating with producers Hudson Mohawke and XXXchange on a solo album. The end result was a 10-track album geared more to alternative dance than to indie rock. Released in June 2010, "The Boxer" received favorable reviews from critics thanks to songs like "Rise," "Walk Tall" and "On the Lam."
Another piece of news to come out in 2009 was that Kele also confirmed rumors that he is gay and was named Sexiest Out Gay Male Artist by the music website LP33.
Despite rumors that he was finished with Bloc Party, Kele was welcomed back into the fold when the band started writing material for a fourth album in 2011. Even as he released another EP titled "The Hunter," the group announced "Four," which was released on August 20, 2012. A 2013 North American tour kicked off in January, with the band playing live performances of "Black Crown" and "Leaf Skeleton," which are bonus tracks on the album.
