The New York Mets moved to Citi Field in 2009 after playing at Shea Stadium since 1964. Citi Field is located in Queens, New York on Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, which hosted the World’s Fair in 1939 and 1964. Citi Field is located near Shea Stadium’s former location — in fact, Parking Lot D at Citi Field covers most of the area of Shea’s former playing field. The exterior of the stadium is very similar to historic Ebbets Field, which was the home of the Brooklyn Dodgers.

Citi Field is the fifth newest park in Major League Baseball. Its capacity for baseball is 41,922, which is actually 15,000 seats fewer than Shea Stadium, which was built as a multipurpose stadium for baseball and football. Citi Field’s original dimensions allowed for little offense, and the park initially developed a reputation as a pitcher-friendly stadium. The Mets altered the dimensions for the 2012 season to promote more offense, and the offensive numbers of many Mets players improved as a result.

The Mets’ new ballpark has already hosted a number of important events. Citi Field was the site of the 2013 MLB All-Star game, in which third baseman David Wright represented the Mets in the starting lineup, and Mets pitcher Matt Harvey started the game for the National League.

In 2015, Citi Field hosted its first World Series. The NL Champion Mets played in the Series against the Kansas City Royals. The Mets won the first World Series game at Citi Field but ultimately lost the series in five games.

Citi Field hosts the NHL’s annual Winter Classic on New Year’s Day in 2018. The New York Rangers will play against the Buffalo Sabres (due to a tax arrangement between the Rangers and Madison Square Garden, Buffalo is considered the home team). Other non-baseball events, like friendly soccer matches, have been played at Citi Field, but the Winter Classic marks the first hockey game at the stadium.
