Buffalo Bills Preseason Details
Training camp for the Buffalo Bills has been centered on western New York since the team’s founding in 1960. The Bills spent 12 years at Niagara University in Niagara Falls before an 18-year stint at SUNY Fredonia. The team eventually moved to St. John Fisher College in 2000. This private college an hour east of Buffalo provides a good staging area for each season of Bills football.
Bills training camp provides entertainment for fans of all ages. The team offers the Bills Experience Area, an activity zone that includes QB Challenge and Running Back Challenge games along with daily visits by the mascot, Billy. Fans are also treated to theme days like Christmas in July and Wild West Day that add some creativity to summer practices. Each practice is free and open to the public during training camp.
The Bills have traveled extensively for preseason games throughout their history. In 1961, the Bills played the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League in a rare crossover of the two leagues. The team journeyed to England for a preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles in 1991 and Berlin for a game against the Minnesota Vikings in 1993. Buffalo has also met NFL teams in neutral locations including a 1963 preseason game against the Denver Broncos in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and a 1990 game against the Chicago Bears in Columbia, South Carolina.
The Buffalo Bills have developed Great Lakes rivalries during the preseason. The Bills play the Detroit Lions during most preseasons. Buffalo and Detroit are only four hours apart, offering an opportunity for both fan bases to take part in the rivalry. Bills fans also enjoy a preseason rivalry with the Cleveland Browns with the cities separated by a three-hour drive. Buffalo mixes in preseason games with regional NFC opponents like the New York Giants and the Eagles. No matter the opponent, Bills fans get ready for the regular season with outdoor tailgating and a pregame party at the team’s indoor training facility.
Bills preseason games in the past allowed successful players opportunities to build excitement among fans. Future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly made the jump from the United States Football League to the Bills during the 1986 preseason. Running back Thurman Thomas began the path to multiple Super Bowl appearances and the Hall of Fame during the 1988 preseason.
