Carolina Panthers Preseason Details
The Carolina Panthers have been reliable in their preseason preparations since joining the NFL in 1995. The team’s first training camp took place at Wofford College in South Carolina and has remained at the school in the following years. Each training camp starts with the Kickoff Party, a free event open to fans who want to eat and celebrate the team prior to the first practice of the season. This event features the team’s cheerleading team, football activities for kids, and the Black & Blue Crew.
Every training camp practice is free and open to the public unless otherwise noted. The Panthers designate one practice day as Play 60 Day with inflatables and activities to encourage activity among younger fans. Carolina also gets kids close to the action with the Panthers Pal program, which allows kids in the program to watch practice from the field. The annual Fan Fest prior to the first preseason game features a scrimmage and fireworks show at Bank of America Stadium. This event requires a ticket with proceeds supporting the team’s charitable foundation.
Bank of America Stadium has been the home of Panthers football since opening as Ericsson Stadium in 1996. The Panthers defeated the Chicago Bears 30-12 in the stadium’s first preseason game on August 3, 1996. Bank of America Stadium has been a popular venue for soccer matches, concerts, and college football games. Preseason games allow fans to enjoy beautiful views of the Charlotte skyline and concessions from Bojangles, Carolina BBQ, and other regional favorites.
The Carolina Panthers have developed rivalries with several AFC teams over the years. The team revisits a past Super Bowl matchup with the New England Patriots during most preseasons. The Patriots aren’t the only AFC East team that regularly plays the Panthers in the preseason, however. The Buffalo Bills and the Miami Dolphins often appear on the Panthers exhibition schedule. Panthers fans also enjoy regular matchups against the Jacksonville Jaguars, a rivalry dating back to when both teams entered the NFL.
The preseason history of the Panthers has been a series of firsts and launching pads to future success. The Panthers defeated the Denver Broncos 19-10 in their first home preseason game on August 12, 1995, which was held in their temporary home at Clemson University. In 2002, the team began its run to their first-ever Super Bowl with a 37-30 preseason shootout against the Washington Redskins. Carolina’s 2015 campaign started with a 25-24 victory over the Bills in the preseason and ended with a Super Bowl loss to the Denver Broncos after a 15-1 season.
