Houston Dynamo Details

The Houston Dynamo entered Major League Soccer during the 2006 season after the owners of the San Jose Earthquakes moved the club to Houston. The new club featured an orange-and-white jersey and took its name from the Houston Dynamo of the defunct United Soccer League. The Dynamo played at Robertson Stadium from 2006 to 2011 before moving to BBVA Compass Stadium in 2012. Despite the move, the club maintained the same badge and color scheme across its early history.

MLS Cup victories in 2006 and 2007 got the new club off to a fast start. The Dynamo placed second in the Western Conference each season. In 2006, Houston defeated Chivas USA in the conference semifinals. The Dynamo reached the 2006 MLS Cup by defeating the Colorado Rapids. Houston defeated the New England Revolution on penalties with MLS Cup MVP Brian Ching finishing the scoring.

Houston started the 2007 MLS playoffs by defeating FC Dallas in the conference semifinals. The club set up a rematch with the New England Revolution by winning the Western Conference final against the Kansas City Wizards. After falling behind in the 20th minute, Houston tied the match on a Joseph Ngwenya goal. A Dwayne De Rosario goal clinched the cup for Houston and De Rosario won the MLS Cup MVP.

The Dynamo expanded its trophy haul by winning the 2018 U.S. Open Cup. The club’s route to the cup included victories over NTX Rayados, Minnesota United, Sporting Kansas City, and Los Angeles Football Club. Houston met the Philadelphia Union in the final, which the Dynamo won 3-0. Forward Mauro Manotas netted two goals and Philadelphia defender Auston Trusty scored an own goal to complete the scoring. Manotas won the tournament’s Golden Boot as the top goalscorer with six goals.

The club’s early successes are attributed to a strong roster assembled prior to the move from San Jose. Team leaders including Brian Ching, Pat Onstad, and Brad Davis were originally acquired as Earthquakes players. Ching played for the Dynamo from 2006 to 2013, while Davis was a Dynamo player from 2006 to 2015. The Dynamo’s 2018 Open Cup run included young international players including Alberth Ellis, Mauro Manotas, and Tomas Martinez.
