Tennessee Titans Preseason Details

The Tennessee Titans started their football life as the Houston Oilers, who were founding members of the American Football League in 1960. The Oilers moved to Tennessee in 1997 and became the Titans in 1999. The Oilers held all of their training camps in Texas except for a 1963 preseason stint in Colorado Springs. Since moving to Nashville, the Titans have kept their camps in the area including an extended run at Saint Thomas Sports Park starting in 2000.

Fans of the Titans enjoy ample seating, frequent autograph opportunities, and free admission during preseason practices. The team asks up to 20 players to sign autographs following each practice. The Titans also add covered seating and regular bleachers around their practice field to ensure fan comfort. Training camp visitors also stay cool in the hot Tennessee summer with misting areas throughout the facility. The Tennessee Titans hold an annual Friday Night Lights practice at an area high school to connect the NFL with the sport’s grassroots.

The franchise’s most memorable preseason moments coincided with important landmarks in team history. The Houston Oilers lost their first preseason game 27-10 to the Dallas Cowboys in 1960. The Oilers defeated the Washington Redskins in a field goal battle 9-3 during the first preseason game at the Houston Astrodome. After the team moved to Nashville, they kicked off their Titans history in 1999 with a 17-3 win over the Atlanta Falcons.

The Titans have played at Nissan Stadium since arriving in the Music City. This stadium started as Adelphia Coliseum before changing to The Coliseum, LP Field, and the 2016 switch to Nissan Stadium. In addition to Titans home games, the stadium has hosted U.S. men’s and women’s soccer matches, concerts, and college football games. Concession options span from local favorites like hot chicken waffles to less common fare like a Hawaiian-themed burger.

The Tennessee Titans compete against the Carolina Panthers on a regular basis in the preseason. The Titans and the Panthers joined the NFL in 1995 as expansion teams, setting up a rivalry based on a common history. Panthers fans also enjoy preseason rivalries with the Minnesota Vikings and the Kansas City Chiefs due to frequent appearances on the schedule. Carolina has also played teams like the Los Angeles Chargers and the Miami Dolphins who aren’t frequent opponents in the regular season.
